Once More from QM2 -- day 4

Picture: the funnel...the red/orange color of Cunard.....came about because the original ship's funnel was painted red, but when fired the heat turned it a red/orange color and the Scotsman who owned part of the company was too tight to have it repainted.

Awoke with a start at 7:15--breakfast had arrived, and we were definitely in bed to receive same. We had coffee in robes as we considered the day. First major stop was breakfast food again. We met two nice couples one from Indiana and one from UK, but with a winter home in Florida. Talked about houses and driving in our respective countries. After breakfast we headed to the cabin and did some laundry, actually Nancy did the work. It is amazing to find so many people who are unsure of how to work the machines. The laundry is getting more crowded as we get closer to the end of the voyage.

Neil attended a lecture about whaling. He found out that scrimshaw is not really carving. It is a process of drawing a design on the tooth, using a series of needles to bore tiny holes into the tooth, and then wiping the tooth with lampblack to create the carved appearance.

After laundry and lecture, we went up top to take pictures and spy out what is happening on decks eleven and twelve, being careful not to be outside by the funnel at noon when the whistles blow. The time changes are beginning to wear upon us, so we found ourselves taking a nap after doing our mile around the deck after lunch. Naptime was lovely. There is something about the gentle rocking of the ship that induces the desire to nap and to sleep.

Tonight was a formal dress night again. If I must say so, we do dress up well. Dinner was its usual 1 ½ hour affair. Who is going to pull out my chair, put my napkin in my lap, serve gourmet meals and cater to my every whim when we get home?….Neil and I are looking for volunteers! After dinner we walked by the casino and played two more of the four dollars we won on the first night. Although we did win some, we eventually lost the two dollars….the house always win, but playing the penny and nickel slots is pretty amuzing…..watched a woman play $15.00 in the time we played one.

There are definitely more wealthy people on board this ship than people like us. There are a lot of trophy wives and men with children who should be their grandchildren. The amount of money that people spend on alcohol is wild…..a glass of wine is anywhere from 6 to 10 dollars.

Back to the events of the evening…..After dinner we again went to the Royal Court theatre. This time we watched international opera tenor Anthony Stuart Lloyd from Wales. In spite of how the program was printed, Mr. Lloyd sang a medley of songs from Broadway shows and a bit of opera. He included songs from The South Pacific, Porky and Bess, The Sound of Music, The Fidler on the Roof, and Old Man River. The show was very, very good.

After the Royal Court Theater we wandered on down to the Queen’s Room where we listened to ballroom dance music and watched people dance. Then we went to G32 to watch the band--Caribbean Band Vibz…..very good. We had gone to see Absolutely Abba which we thought was a group…nope, it was a DJ presented show…..we stayed for while and then headed to bed.

4,096 Steps recorded…..one trip down to third floor and across the ship and back up not included. All after dinner trips not included. Thought we had lost the stepometer

  1. We will begin training Aiden and Gavin in the fine art of waiting. Napkins in the lap should not be too difficult, but pulling out the chairs without tipping them over could be a stretch. Enjoying the blog!
